Scarlett, born Jemimah Lerato Chulu is a proud Zambian, she understood the significance of the currency – Kwacha, and her dexterity in telling a story of optimism built on the Zambian legal tender shows her songwriting prowess.
Scarlett takes pride in her nationality and it is reflecting in her music, a fusion of afro-funk, jazz and soul. In her latest song titled 10 Kwacha, she offers a timely word of encouragement in these tough and uncertain times. A reminder to count your blessings and do the best with what you have.
The Kwacha is the currency of Zambia, it is the Nyanja word for “dawn” or “the sun has risen”. The Pan-Zambian rendition was largely sang in Nyanja which is one of Zambia’s main dialects.
In the visual of the song shot in Zambia, the director, Lanzee Mulenga captures the story of 10 Kwacha note changing hands and solving little problems for ordinary people as it does for many in the everyday life of Zambians. Scarlett appeals to the listener’s inner optimist and reminds them that “it’s gonna be alright”. The song is an ode to her grandmother who passed in 2018 and was an integral part of Scarlett’s journey.
